CPD Event on June 19 – Alan Farber on Jury Trials

Alan Farber, of Farber & Folk, Barristers and Solicitors, will present on the emergent issues with civil jury trials in British Columbia. This session promises to be fascinating both to litigators and to solicitors. The jury trial is traditionally hailed as a cornerstone of democracy; yet it is equally criticized as a theatre in which performance can trump justice. As British Columbia tries to prevent those dramatics, we see more and more mistrials. There is a significant shift in how jury trials are conducted, and their role in the civil justice system.

Alan will discuss what has changed and why, and the impact of those changes on the fundamental principles of justice that we have assigned to juries to uphold. Alan and I have discussed this at great length already, and as a solicitor who rarely sets foot in the courtroom, I was fascinated.

Join us on Thursday, June 19, at 12:00 noon, in the Main Boardroom at Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP, 25th Floor, 700 West Georgia Street.

Please R.S.V.P. to Jeremy Costin, and please send your cheque for $20, payable to the Jewish Lawyers Association of British Columbia to:

October updates – B.I. and Louis Brier CPD programs

Shana Tovah u’Metukah! We hope you all had a warm and meaningful High Holiday season, and wish you all the best of health and happiness in the coming year.
We are pleased to announce that after we assisted the Beth Israel Law & Learn program last year, it was so successful that it is now an independent CPD-accredited program! We will continue to offer the B.I. Law & Learn marketing support as a Community CPD event, as we do for other events in the community, but it is now its own program, listed separately on the Law Society’s CPD course list, and Beth Israel will be primarily responsible for the program’s marketing and promotion. Jeremy Costin, one of the Jewish Lawyers Association of BC’s directors, will continue working with the B.I. Law & Learn as its program chair separately from his continuing work with the JLABC.
The B.I. Law & Learn begins its new series in one week, with details below under Community CPD.
Jewish Lawyers Group
We are working hard to bring you more fascinating Jewish Lawyers Group events. There are several exciting speakers who will present events soon; we are in the process of finalizing dates for these upcoming lunches.
Community CPD
Beth Israel Law & Learn
After the last 6-session program’s phenomenal success, the B.I. Law & Learn program is now independent! Each month, a prominent jurist will present an area of secular law, the Jewish counterpart of which will be presented by Rabbi Jonathan Infeld. The calibre of presentation and discussion last year was outstanding.
There are 6 one-hour lunchtime sessions at $36/each or $180 for all 6. The course is CPD-accredited by the Law Society of BC. All events are at the Erickson Room on the ground level of 1075 West Georgia.
The six speakers are:
  • Mr. Justice S. David Frankel, BC Court of Appeal
  • Wally Oppal, QC
  • Tamara Levy, UBC Faculty of Law
  • Israel Chafetz, QC
  • Andrew Wilkinson, MLA
  • Mr. Justice Gordon S. Funt, BC Supreme Court
The first session, on Thursday, October 10, 2013, at 12:30 p.m., and presented by Mr. Justice S. David Frankel of the B.C. Court of Appeal, is entitled “Universal Health Care, Obamacare, and the Law.” As anyone who has attended a session given by Mr. Justice Frankel can attest, it promises to be an insightful and intellectual discussion.
